MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University baseball team had three players named to the 2006 Preseason all-BIG EAST team. Senior shortstop Doug Nelms, senior outfielder Stan Posluszny, and junior catcher David Carpenter were all tabbed to the preseason all-conference list.
Nelms, a native of Bristol, Va., was selected as an infielder and hit .349 last season with 11 doubles. Nelms, an all-BIG EAST first team selection in 2005, also had three home runs and 28 RBI at the plate last year.
Posluszny batted .286 last season and emerged as one of the top power hitters in the conference. The Alquippa, Pa., native hit 12 home runs and drove in 50 RBI in 2005.
Carpenter, a Fairmont, W.Va., native was selected as the preseason BIG EAST catcher after batting .282 in 38 games. Carpenter had eight doubles, one triple, three home runs and 18 RBI for the Mountaineers last season.
Both Carpenter and Posluszny were third team all-BIG EAST selections last season.
The Mountaineers (25-30-0, 10-15-0) received 51 points in the voting by the league’s head coaches and finished in a tie for seventh with Villanova, while Notre Dame was chosen to win the 2006 BIG EAST baseball title. The coaches were not allowed to vote for their own teams or players during the voting.
Pittsburgh junior right hander Bill Muldowney was picked as the Preseason Pitcher of the Year, while the Panthers’ junior second baseman Jim Negrych was selected the Preseason Player of the Year for the second consecutive year.
The top eight teams at the end of the regular season will advance to the 2006 BIG EAST Championship, which will be a double-elimination format tournament. The Mountaineers open the 2006 season on February 17, in Winston-Salem, N.C., for a three game series with Bucknell.
