PITTSBURGH – Britney Davis-White scored a season-high 20 points to lead West Virginia to a 77-61 victory over Duquesne Saturday night at the A.J. Palumbo Center in Pittsburgh.
Davis-White, a Midland College transfer, made 7 of 11 from the floor including 3 of 3 from 3-point range. The Houston native was also 3 of 3 from the free throw line.
Sophomore Chakhia Cole chipped in with 13 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, while junior Tameka Kelly came off the bench to score a season-high 12 points and centers Olayinka Sanni and Yelena Leuchanka contributed 10 points each.
Leading scorer Meg Bulger was held to just 9 points on 4 of 11 shooting. The Pittsburgh native was only 1 of 7 from 3-point range.
West Virginia (5-2) made 26 of 53 from the floor for 49 percent and was 21 of 26 from the free throw line. The Mountaineers had a 40-21 rebounding advantage.
WVU took control of the game midway through the first half, using a 9-0 run to turn a 15-14 lead into a 24-14 advantage. West Virginia led by 11 on three occasions before taking a nine-point, 39-30 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Mountaineers had an 8-1 run at the start of the second half to build their lead to 16, 47-31, on a Cole layup and had its biggest lead of the game at 22 after a pair of Kelly free throws made the score 61-39.
Aiga Bautre led Duquesne with a game-high 24 points. Duquesne drops to 3-5 with the loss.
West Virginia has now won seven straight against Duquesne. The Mountaineers return to the court on Monday night to take on Cleveland State at the WVU Coliseum. Game time is 7 pm.
