MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - West Virginia University men’s soccer forward Jarrod Smith was named to the National Soccer Coaches Association of America all-Mid Atlantic second team today, while defender Devon McTavish was tabbed to the third team.
Smith, a junior forward from Havelock North, New Zealand, led the Mountaineer offense with eight goals and a pair of assists. He leads all current WVU players with 18 career goals. Smith’s 79 shots in 2005 was the most ever recorded by a Mountaineer player in a single season.
McTavish moved to the defense as a senior and helped anchor one of the toughest back lines in school history. The Winchester, Va., native was an instrumental in the defense setting the school record for shutouts in a season with 12. He finished his senior season with two goals and an assist. McTavish’s 75 matches played in as a Mountaineer ranks third all-time in school history for a WVU player.
Both players served a major role in leading WVU to the second round of the NCAA tournament and helping the team post a 13-8-2 record, both tying program records.
