MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - With an at-large bid, the West Virginia University women’s soccer team claimed its sixth-straight trip to the NCAA tournament it was announced Monday afternoon.
The Mountaineers (11-5-3) travel to Penn State, the region’s No. 1 seed, for a first round match with Hofstra on Friday, Nov. 11. The time of the match has yet to be determined. Hofstra (14-3-3) earned an automatic bid to the 2005 Women’s College Cup by claiming the Colonial Athletic Association title.
“This is great reflection of how hard our girls have worked,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown of her team’s selection into the field of 64. “It shows how committed they are to success.
“We’re playing great soccer right now,” Izzo-Brown continued. “And, I know that there is even better soccer to come in this tournament.”
West Virginia has a 4-4-1 all-time record in NCAA tournament play. Last season the Mountaineers advanced to the tournament’s second round with a 2-1 victory over Southern Methodist before falling by the same margin to Texas in Austin. In 2003, WVU advanced to the Sweet 16 before falling in double-overtime to Florida State.
Regional host Penn State (19-0-1) plays Bucknell (11-8-1) in State College’s other first round match on Friday evening. The winners of the West Virginia/Hofstra and Penn State/Bucknell contest face off in the tournament’s second round on Sunday, Nov. 13. All times are yet to be determined.
The Mountaineers are one of four Big East teams that received NCAA bids, joining Notre Dame, Connecticut and Marquette.
