MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Connecticut’s Kathleen Frank scored with 4:20 left in the second overtime period to advance past West Virginia in the BIG EAST semifinal match Friday night at Marquette’s Valley Fields.
Play throughout the entire match was even as both teams got dangerous offensive chances on the other, but it was UConn that prevailed in the end.
”Obviously, we’re disappointed,” said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “But, I’m proud of how our girls battled and fought tonight. This game could have gone either way, but unfortunately, we didn’t come out on top.”
West Virginia held a 10-6 shot advantage at the half, with the Mountaineers’ best chance coming with 12 minutes left in the half. Freshman Deana Everrett, appearing in her first match since suffering an ankle injury in WVU’s win at Georgetown, put pressure on a Connecticut defender that resulted in Everrett possessing the ball on the left side of the penalty box. Taking a wide angle, Everrett hit a left footed shot that forced UConn goalkeeper Stephanie Labbe to make one of her four saves in the half.
Six minutes into the second half, West Virginia missed a great chance at a score when a deflection from an Ashley Banks throw landed at the feet of freshman Krystle Kallman on the six yard line. Kallman sailed a shot wide right and the match stayed knotted at zero.
Connecticut upped its tempo and put good pressure on the Mountaineers in the second half, taking 11 shots to West Virginia’s three. At the end of regulation, West Virginia goalkeeper had made a season-high eight saves.
West Virginia now awaits the announcement of the NCAA tournament field of 64. The Mountaineers are seeking their sixth-straight trip to NCAAs. The selection comes Monday, Nov. 7 at 5:00 p.m. and can be seen on ESPNews.
