MORGANTOWN, W.VA. – The West Virginia University men’s swimming and diving team just missed cracking the College Swimming Coaches Association Top 25 dual-meet poll, released yesterday on CollegeSwimming.com.
Coach Sergio Lopez’ Mountaineer men are tied with UNLV for 26th place receiving five votes. Two weeks ago West Virginia was 28th in a polling of college swimming coaches from across the country.
“This shows how much our program is improving and that we’re moving in the right direction,” said Lopez. “Being in the rankings certainly helps us in recruiting.”
Lopez says his men’s team has two relays (400 freestyle and 400 medley relay) that could be ranked in the top 10 when individual rankings come out later this season.
The only Big East men’s team presently ranked in the Top 25 is Notre Dame at No. 18 with 52 votes. The top 25 dual-meet poll only takes into account a team’s dual meet performances and is not a predictor of how teams will finish at nationals.
The Mountaineer men (1-1) travel to Duquesne to take on the Dukes along with the women tonight in dual meet action in Pittsburgh. The meet is scheduled to get underway at 6 pm.
