TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - Senior Susan Davis closed out her stellar Mountaineer career at NCAA Nationals hosted by Indiana State University in Terre Haute, Ind., Monday, Nov. 21. Davis placed 74th out of 253 runners in the 6k race with a time of 20:54.0.
“This was a great performance by a fifth-year senior,” track coach Jeff Huntoon said. “She might have one of the top finishes in Mountaineer history.”
Northern Arizona’s Johanna Nilsson took the individual title with a time of 19:33.9, while Columbia-Barnard’s Caroline Bierbaum finished second at 19:46.0. Stephanie Madia of Notre Dame, Butler’s Victoria Mitchell, and Duke’s Clara Horowitz rounded out the top five finishers at the meet. Stanford took the team title with four runners finishing in the top 50.
“Susan ran very well today and performed even better than what she did here last year,” cross country head coach Sean Cleary said.
The Romney, W.Va. native, was the fifth BIG EAST runner to cross the stripe and the eighth of the Mid-Atlantic region. Davis’ solid individual effort saw her finish in the top one-third of the runners in the field at the NCAA Championships. She had previously placed 99th at the NCAA Championships in 2004, her first appearance at nationals.
“This is a great end for someone who was selfless all year long,” Huntoon added. “She helped bring along a lot of youngsters and it’s a nice stamp on the end of her career as well as the future of the program.”
