Rifle: WVU Travels to Navy on Friday

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University rifle team steps out of conference action and competes on the road for the first time this season when the Mountaineers visit the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., on Friday, Nov. 18, beginning at noon.
West Virginia (1-2, 1-2 in the GARC) is coming off its first win of the season, a 4590-4554 victory over North Carolina State on Nov. 13. The Mountaineers tallied a season-high aggregate which also included the team’s best smallbore (2300) and air rifle (2290) scores of the year.
Senior Brian Launer leads WVU this year with a 1153.3 average aggregate score and a 576.7 average air rifle score. Sophomore Lafe Kunkel shows the best smallbore average of 578.3.
The last time WVU faced Navy (3-2) was the 2004-05 season opener in Morgantown, when the Mids defeated the Mountaineers, 4650-4560, behind Matt Albright’s 592-smallbore, 589-air rifle performance. Kunkel paced West Virginia in that meet with a 584 air, while Amy Smith fired a 573 smallbore.
