MORGANTOWN, W.Va. -- The West Virginia University rifle team won its first match of the season Sunday with a 4590-4554 win over visiting North Carolina State at the Mountaineer Rifle Range.
The win was the Mountaineers first in the Great America Rifle Conference since 2002-03, the year before their one-year hiatus as a varsity team.
"I've always believed that as long as team members are shooting personal bests we will be successful," said WVU head coach Marsha Beasley. "I am confident we'll continue to come up this season."
The Mountaineers (1-2, 1-2) shot a season-high team aggregate which included a 2300 smallbore total and a 2290 air rifle sum. The Wolfpack compiled a 2283 in smallbore and 2271 in air.
Senior Brian Launer paced the WVU air rifle team with a match-high 577, followed by sophomore Amy Smith with a 575 and sophomore Lafe Kunkel with a 574.
Kunkel tied the Wolfpack's Thomas Knight for the top smallbore score of 578, while Launer and junior Robin Glebes carded 576.
Glebes, a first-time member of the WVU counting smallbore team, had an outstanding match as his 576 smallbore was 11 points higher than his previous personal best set during Saturday's loss to Mississippi. His non-counting 575 in air rifle was also a personal high.
WVU returns to action Nov. 18 at Navy.
