UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The 20th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team fell, 5-2, at No.1-seed Penn State in second round NCAA tournament action on Sunday afternoon at Jeffrey Field.
Penn State (21-0-1) took an early 1-0 when freshman Allie Long got behind the WVU defense, ran onto a through ball from fellow freshman Sheree Gray and beat Mountaineer (12-6-3) goalkeeper Lana Bannerman to the right upper 90.
The Nittany Lions went up 2-0 with 18:36 to play in the first half when an unlucky deflection from a great WVU defensive play set up Jean Rettig’s second goal of the season. The Mountaineer backline closed in on PSU’s Tiffany Weimer, taking the ball of her feet, but the deflection went straight to Rettig, leaving her with only Bannerman to beat.
With under 10 seconds left in the first half, the Mountaineers nearly got on the board when Kim Bonilla flicked the ball from a throw-in by Ashley Banks toward the Penn State goal. Bonilla’s header went far post and McLeod made a fingertip save, paring the ball out of bounds.
Four minutes into the second half, Bonilla did get her goal. Senior Kambria Riggins sent a short cross from the goaline to the near post where Bonilla again flicked the ball far post, this time beat McLeod to her left upper 90.
Minutes later, Cocchi headed a ball toward the Penn State crossbar, forcing McLeod to save another near Mountaineer score by punching the ball out of bounds.
Penn State regained its two-goal lead when Weimer scored on a header from Heather Tomco at the 62:09 mark.
Zoe Bouchelle put the Nittany Lions up 3-1 with an assisted score in the 76th minute.
Riggins added her second assist of the match in the 87th minute when she connected with Rachael Minnich for West Virginia’s second goal of the match, making the score 4-2 PSU.
Penn State went up 5-2 with 5:38 in the match on an assisted goal from Aubrey Aden-Buie.
Bannerman tied a season-high with nine saves in the match.
"We had a great season,” head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown said of her tenth at WVU. “What we did best all year long and was battle and today was no different. We battled until the end.
”I’m very proud to have coached this team and to have been with this group of seniors for the last four or five years. It has been an honor.”
The loss ends the Mountaineers 2005 season.
