BETHLEHEM, Pa. - The West Virginia University cross country team finished 18th with 500 points at the Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships, Saturday, Nov. 12, in Bethlehem, Pa. The event was hosted on the Goodman campus at Lehigh.
Standout senior Susan Davis, an all-BIG EAST performer, was the top Mountaineer finisher in eighth place with a time of 20.50.7. Her top-10 finish was her fourth of the season. Davis improved on her 13th place finish for WVU in 2004 at regionals.
“After running the finest cross country race of her college career, Susan will have to wait until Monday to see if she gets the call and has qualified for the NCAA championships,” head coach Sean Cleary said.
Lehigh junior Jennifer Schappert crossed the line one spot ahead of Davis with a time of 20.44.9. This was the first time Lehigh has qualified a runner for nationals, since the NCAA adopted its current regional qualifying format. Davis, on the otherhand, will be forced wait and see if she qualifies for nationals.
“Two individual qualifying spots are available to women across the country,” Cleary said. “We feel confident that Susan will garner one of the coveted spots.”
Princeton took the regional championship with 64 points behind the running of individual race winner Cack Ferrell (19:58.3). Villanova followed in second with 98 points to wrap up the other automatic team spot for nationals, while individual qualifiers were Keira Carlstrom of American, Rachel Papin of La Salle, Maggie Infeld of Georgetown and Schappert.
