MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The West Virginia University rifle team dropped a Great America Rifle Conference match against Mississippi, 4630-4556, at the Mountaineer Rifle Range on Saturday, Nov. 12.
West Virginia (0-2, 0-2) shot a 2280 smallbore course and 2276 in air rifle, while the Rebels fired 2311 and 2319, respectively.
“We’ve made progress, but it’s just not showing in our scores,” said WVU head coach Marsha Beasley. “We still have a ways to go.”
Senior Brian Launer was the Mountaineers’ top marksman on the day, as he carded a personal-best 583 smallbore score. He fell one point shy of tying the school record for a 60-shot smallbore course since the NCAA switched over to the 60-shot course of fire last season.
The Rebels’ Jennifer Lorenzen fired the top smallbore score on the day with a 584, followed by Launer, Mississippi’s Shannon Wilson (580) and WVU sophomore Lafe Kunkel (576).
Mississippi’s air rifle scores were a deciding factor in the match, as the top five air scores were by Rebel shooters. Natasha Phillips and Shannon Wilson shot the best air totals for the Rebels with 583 apiece, however Wilson was designated a non-counter prior to the match.
West Virginia’s top air rifle score was also by a non-counting team member as Amy Smith shot a 574. The top Mountaineer counting air score was Launer’s 573.
Sophomore Natasha Dinsmore had a career day for WVU, as her 569 air rifle sum and her non-counting smallbore score of 540 were personal bests.
West Virginia returns to action tomorrow at the Mountaineer Rifle Range against first-year GARC member North Carolina State beginning at 8 a.m.
