MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University cross country team will attempt to defend its 2004 title at the Mid-Atlantic Regional championship this Saturday, Nov. 12, in Lock Haven, Pa.
“We are defined in college athletics by what we do when the competition is the toughest,” head coach Sean Cleary says. “This group has been training for one meet all year.”
The Mountaineers will be led by standout senior Susan Davis, who placed 11th at the BIG EAST championships two weeks ago to receive all-BIG EAST honors. Last year, WVU had three top-10 finishers including Davis placing 13th with a time of 21:31 and helping WVU to finish atop the 24-team field with 63 points.
“Susan has not had a bad race all year, she is primed both mentally and physically to attack the challenge of qualifying for the NCAA meet,” Cleary says. “I am very confident in her preparations and her mental toughness.”
The 2004 Mid-Atlantic Regional title was the first in team history, earning it an automatic trip to the NCAA National Championships.
“My goals for this group is for each and every runner from WVU to run the best race that they have run this year, this coming weekend,” Cleary says. “I fully expect for our team to leave the meet better prepared to handle the pressure in the coming years when we are qualifying for the NCAA Championships.”
