MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to Syracuse by a score of 3-0 (30-32, 22-30, 25-30) on Sunday, Oct. 9 at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (13-7, 2-4 BIG EAST) dropped its first game 30-22 to the Orange. West Virginia's Abby Tevis led the team with six kills in the first game.
In the second game, Syracuse used solid serving to go up 17-8, but the Mountaineers fought their way back with key kills from junior Gina Cusanelli and senior Julie Hockenson and pulled within five before the Orange closed out the game at 30-22.
West Virginia did its best to shake off the disappointment of the first two games and came out in the third game with intensity. The two teams rallied early in the game before Syracuse went on a run mid-game to go up and eventually seal the victory.
Sophomore Abby Tevis had a career-high night with 14 kills, which led all Mountaineers. Sophomore Kailee Goold had yet another double-double, registering 36 assists and 14 digs. Hockenson finished with nine kills.
West Virginia will be back in action Friday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m. as they travel to take on rival Pitt.
