MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University volleyball team fell in its attempt to take down Marquette, losing 3-1 (24-30, 31-33, 30-24, 14-30) on Saturday, Oct. 8, at the WVU Coliseum.
Game one went to the Golden Eagles by a score of 30-24. Senior Julie Hockenson led the Mountaineers (13-6, 2-3 BIG EAST) with four kills and one block in the first game.
"Julie came up big again," assistant coach Camille Gutierrez said. "She's stepped it up when we really needed her to."
In a highly contested second game, junior Gina Cusanelli and sophomore Ashley Pappas led West Virginia with five kills apiece. Marquette's biggest lead of the game was five at 17-12 until the Mountaineers used key kills from Pappas to get back in the game. Tied 25-25, West Virginia and Marquette traded points until the Golden Eagles were able to pull away, winning 33-31.
After the 10 minute intermission, the Mountaineers came out with intensity Marquette was unable to match, winning by a score of 30-24. Up 4-3, West Virginia went on an 8-3 run and never looked back. Defensively, sophomore Abby Tevis played strong for the Mountaineers in game three with seven digs.
"Abby and Ashley came in and did some great things for us," Gutierrez said. "Gina stepped up and was a big offensive threat as well."
But the fourth game proved to be the last as Marquette went on to win 30-14. Behind Jamie Mueller's six kills in game four, Marquette was able to pull out the victory.
"Marquette is a solid team and doesn't make many mistakes," Gutierrez said. "Ultimately, it was our passing that hurt us and we couldn't run our offense."
Sophomore Kailee Goold had a double-double with 43 assists and 14 digs. Hockenson and Cusanelli each had 12 kills on the day, with Pappas adding 11.
The Mountaineers are back in action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 9, as they take on Syracuse at 2 p.m.
