MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 6, 2005) - The West Virginia University women's tennis team is set to host the Martha Thorn Invitational October 7-9 at the Mountaineer Tennis Complex in Morgantown, W.Va.
Formerly known as the WVU Fall Classic, the tournament was renamed the Martha Thorn Invitational after long-time women's tennis coach Martha Thorn retired prior to the 2001 season. Thorn led the WVU women's tennis program for its first 27 years of existence and was only the fourth Mountaineer coach to accumulate over 300 wins in any sport.
West Virginia looks to build on its recent success this weekend after posting a strong finish at the Maryland Invitational.
"We're trying to build on success from the Maryland tournament," head coach Dan Silverstein said. "We're looking forward to playing in front of a home crowd and a weekend of great competition."
The tournament will feature eight teams in Bucknell, Loyola College, Pitt, Southern Miss, Pitt, Toledo, Villanova and West Virginia. On the singles side, the Mountaineers have two representatives in flight A, Monica Lyskawa and Stacey Percival. Kelly Walsh will compete in flight B, while Raynie Theis and Catherine Koontz will play in flight C. Ashley Constantine will represent West Virginia in flight D. In doubles, the duo of Percival-Theis will compete in flight A, while Koontz-Walsh will play in flight B. Lyskawa-Constantine compete in flight C. Colleen Speaker and Natalia Prinz will not be competing this weekend due to injuries.
"They'll be ready for the next meet at West Point, but they will help lead us off the court with their support and enthusiasm," Siverstein said.
Tournament play will begin every day at 9 a.m.
