INDIANOLA, Pa. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team used a pair of first half goals from Geoff Cameron and Jarrod Smith to defeat Pitt 2-0 at Founders Field in Indianola, Pa., Wednesday night.
The Mountaineers (7-4-1, 3-2-1 BIG EAST) dominated play against the Panthers (2-7-1, 1-5-0 BIG EAST) throughout the match both offensively and defensively. WVU’s stingy defense allowed only two shots on goal, while the offense connected on two of four shots on goal to earn the win.
“Tonight we came out and took care of business against a BIG EAST opponent,” said WVU head coach Mike Seabolt. “We did what we had to do early to get ahead and controlled the tempo for the rest of the match.”
Cameron struck first for West Virginia in the 31st minute of play when he collected a deflected ball off of a Pat Carroll throw in and buried a shot from the top of the penalty box into the lower left corner of the goal.
Just over a minute later at the 31:54 mark Smith took a pass from Andy Wright and turned quickly to rip a hard shot that did not allow goalie Justin Lowery to make any sort of play on it. The goal marked the seventh of the season for the Havelock, New Zealand, native and ties his personal best for goals in a season. Four of his seven goals have come in the last three matches.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Noble recorded his seventh shutout of the season as he made two saves in 90 minutes of work. Pitt’s Justin Lowery allowed both goals in 45 minutes with no saves, while Jordan Marks made two saves and allowed no goals in the second half.
The win over the Panthers is the 30th all-time in the 42 match series. WVU leads the series 30-9-3.
The Mountaineers are just one clean sheet shy of tying last seasons total of eight shutouts and just two short of tying the school record for shutouts in a season, which stands at nine.
West Virginia’s next match comes on Saturday, Oct. 8, when the Mountaineers host Georgetown at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
