MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (October 5, 2005) - The West Virginia University volleyball team defeated St. Francis (Pa.) 3-0 (30-17, 33-31, 30-26) on Wednesday, Oct. 5 at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (13-5, 2-2 BIG EAST) came out with intensity as they rallied off eight consecutive points to start off the match with serving by junior Gina Cusanelli. West Virginia never let up and was led in the first game by senior Julie Hockenson with six kills
"Julie has really stepped up her game and has been very consistent," assistant coach Camille Gutierrez said. "She only had two errors on19 attacks and that's huge. She's been a rock for this team."
St. Francis (Pa.) (3-15) fought back in the second game giving the Mountaineers a good fight. Tied 8-8, the Red Flash used a 6-1 run to go up 14-9, but West Virginia came back with three crucial kills by Hockenson to pull away with the game 33-31.
The third game went point-for-point until the Mountaineers went on a 7-2 run late in the game to win 30-26.
Senior Stephanie Zolna finished with 11 kills on the night. Sophomores Ashley Pappas and Abby Tevis came off the bench to add seven kills apiece. Kailee Goold had another great night with 36 assists.
"Ashley did a great job of stepping in and giving us a spark off the bench," Gutierrez said. "Abby got really aggressive and that's what we needed her to do."
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 2 p.m. as they host Marquette.
