Swimming: Men Down Louisville; Women Fall

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's swimming team downed BIG EAST foe Louisville, 141-90, while the women fell to the Cardinals, 88-156, on Saturday, Oct. 29 at the WVU Natatorium.
On the men's side, the Mountaineers broke a total of four pool records. Sophomore Pablo Marmolejo won two individual events, the 400 IM and 200 fly, breaking pool records in each of those with times of 3:59.37 and 1:48.90, respectively. The pool record in the 200 fly was the oldest, previously held by John Havlik that was set back in 1981. Marmolejo was also a member of the 400 medley relay that broke the pool record with seniors Rick Mann, Chris Hagedorn and sophomore Nick Delic.
Hagedorn had another impressive night with great swims in both relays, but most important was his 20.77 in the 50 free which makes four times in four meets that he broke 20.9 or faster. In the 50 free, the Mountaineers also had senior Kyle Williams place 2nd with a 21.36 and freshman Andrew Langenfeld with a 21.49 get third. Hagedorn was also a member of the 400 free relay that broke also the pool record with a very impressive 3:03.69. The relay was also formed by Mann, Langenfeld and Delic. Delic also won the 100 free with a 45.97.
In the 200 free, sophomore Eduardo Ramirez on with a 1:44.34 and freshman Nathan Farmer placed second with a personal best time of 1:44.49. Freshman Scottie Norton was a double winner in the distance events, winning the 1000 free with a personal best 9:42.66 and his second win coming in the 500 free with a season best time of 4:43.24.
On the women's side, freshman Lindsey Largo had two great races in the distance events with season best times of 5:07.10 in the 500 free and 10:23.09 in the 1000 free. Freshman Rachel Fedyk got her first collegiate win in the 50 free in 24.57, with sophomore Erin Tudor placing second and sophomore Elyse Fisher placing fourth.
Two other freshman who had very good swims and were able to break into the WVU Top All-Time List were freshman Natalie Lautzenheiser with a very good 2:07.35 in the 200 fly that places her 7th in the list, and freshman Isabel Perez with a 2:24.62 in the 200 breast that places her 7th in the list.
Sophomore Tina Gabrilo wont he 200 back with a season-best 2:08.19 and also placed 2nd in the 200 IM.
In diving action, Kenny McAdoo qualified for conference B with a 246.3, making this his best meet of his collegiate career. Freshman Caitlin Coco did well in her first meet on the 3m and sophomore Erica Pfeiffer continues to be strong.
"It was a very exciting meet and I hope it is the beginning of a good rivalry between both schools," head coach Sergio Lopez said. "Arthur (Louisville head coach) is doing a great job and I am very happy to have his team swimming in the BIG EAST conference. I believe his team will help make our team stronger in the conference."
West Virginia travels to Duquesne for their next meet on Friday, November 4 at 6 p.m.
