MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The West Virginia University men’s soccer team wrapped up its 2005 regular season with a 3-1 road win against Marquette in Milwaukee, Wis., on Saturday, Oct. 29.
The win ensures the Mountaineers (11-6-2, 6-4-1 BIG EAST) a first-round home match in the BIG EAST tournament next week. The date and opponent are to be determined.
WVU jumped on the Golden Eagles (5-6-2, 1-8-1 BIG EAST) in the ninth minute of play when freshman Zak Boggs took a pass from teammate Pat Carroll and netted his fifth goal of the season. The assist for Carroll was the third for the defender in his last three matches.
Sophomore midfielder Dan Stratford made the score 2-0 in the 35th minute when he connected on a penalty kick for his fourth goal of the season.
Marquette kept the match interesting as Blair Kohlmeyer dished a pass to Bryan Dahlquist and he knocked a shot home to make it 2-1.
But West Virginia was able to pull away for good in the 74th minute when a Golden Eagle own goal made the score 3-1.
WVU out-shot the Golden Eagles 15-14 for the match. Junior goalkeeper Nick Noble made five saves in 89 minutes of work, while allowing the one goal. Goalkeeper Andy Kroll played the first half for Marquette and he permitted two goals and made two saves. Steven Grow played the second half and allowed the final goal, while making three saves.
This will be the first time since joining the BIG EAST in 1995 that the Mountaineers have participated in the conference tournament in consecutive seasons.
