MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team caps off its 2005 regular season when it travels to Milwaukee, Wis., to face Marquette on Saturday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
The Mountaineers (10-6-2, 5-4-1 BIG EAST) suffered a tough 1-0 loss at the hands of No. 7 Connecticut on Wednesday, Oct. 26, in Morgantown. The loss ensured WVU that it would not get a first round bye in the BIG EAST tournament.
WVU needs a win to help its chances of hosting a first round match at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. A Mountaineer win, coupled with a Notre Dame (vs. Seton Hall) or Georgetown (at UConn) loss, would give the team a home tournament match.
West Virginia has been led throughout the season on offense by junior Jarrod Smith. The forward from Havelock North, New Zealand, has eight goals in 2005 to go along with a pair of assists.
Junior goalkeeper Nick Noble will be in search of his 11th shutout of the season on Saturday. The Damascus, Md., native has recorded 71 saves to date and has posted a 0.76 goals against average.
The Golden Eagles (5-9-1, 1-7-1 BIG EAST) currently sits at the bottom of the BIG EAST blue division in eighth-place. Marquette has struggled offensively throughout the season as it has only been able to muster eight goals. Freshman forward Duncan Silvert-Noftle leads the team in scoring with two goals.
Goalkeepers Steven Grow and Andy Kroll have split time in the net for the Golden Eagles. The two have combined to post a 1.38 GAA and 54 saves.
WVU and Marquette have never met in soccer previously.
