MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team plays host to No. 3 Connecticut in a critical BIG EAST blue division matchup at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 26, in Morgantown, W.Va. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
Wednesday’s match between the Mountaineers (10-5-2, 5-3-1 BIG EAST) and Huskies (10-3-1, 5-3-1 BIG EAST) has major BIG EAST tournament implications as the two teams are currently tied for second in the blue division. Both teams sit just one point behind Seton Hall, which has accumulated 17 points to date.
WVU is coming off of a record-setting match in which the defense, led by junior goalkeeper Nick Noble, set the school single-season shutout record with 10 in a 1-0 win over Providence. Junior Jarrod Smith recorded his team-leading eighth goal of the season against the Friars.
Connecticut dropped its last match to the No. 22 Pirates 1-0 on the road. Chukwudi Chijindu and O’Brian White lead the Husky offense with 16 points apiece. Chijindu has recorded seven goals and two assists, while White has tallied six goals and four assists.
The last WVU-UConn matchup with such important conference implications occurred in 1999 when the two teams faced off in Morgantown on Oct. 17. The Huskies came out of the match victorious 3-0 and ended up finishing first in the conference, while the Mountaineers took third.
Connecticut leads the all-time series 10-1-2. WVU’s only win against the Huskies came in 1997, a 4-3 overtime victory.
