MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men’s soccer team will look to set the season record for shutouts in a season when it goes for clean sheet number 10 against BIG EAST foe Providence on Saturday, Oct. 22, at 1 p.m. in Morgantown. The contest was originally scheduled to be played at 7 pm.
The Mountaineers (9-5-2, 4-3-1 BIG EAST) are in the midst of one of the best defensive seasons in school history. Led by Nick Noble, the WVU defense is allowing the second fewest goals against average in school history (0.79) and have tallied nine shutouts. Only the 1989 and 1998 teams have matched that shutout total.
Freshman Zak Boggs will look to keep the West Virginia offense rolling against the Friars. The Vienna, W.Va., native has four goals and an assist to date.
Providence (4-2-7, 2-2-4 BIG EAST) started out the season with an unbeaten streak of nine games, but has stumbled as of late. In their last four matches the Friars are 0-2-2 with losses to conference powerhouses Connecticut and Notre Dame.
Junior goalkeeper Chris Konopka has played every minute for Providence so far this season. The Toms River, N.J., native has recorded a 1.03 GAA with 65 saves and three shutouts.
Senior forward Eoin Lynch leads the Friar offense with seven goals and four assists in 2005. Last season the Yarmouth, Maine, native did not play in a 3-2 loss to the Mountaineers.
WVU leads the all-time series against Providence 5-4. The Mountaineers are 1-1 against the Friars under head coach Mike Seabolt.
