TAMPA, Fla. - The West Virginia University volleyball team defeated South Florida 3-1 (30-22, 26-30, 30-23, 30-19) on Sunday, Oct. 3 in Tampa, Fla.
The Mountaineers (12-5, 2-2 BIG EAST) got a strong performance from senior Julie Hockenson who had a hitting percentage of .375 and 14 kills.
"The main difference in the third game was when we needed a push, Julie took over," assistant coach Camille Gutierrez said. "Offensively, she carried us in that game. What she did you can't really define on a stat sheet."
Adding in to the West Virginia victory was sophomore Kailee Goold who came up with 50 assists and 15 digs.
"Kailee got the ball to Julie when we needed her to and probably played her most mature match of the season," Gutierrez said.
Senior Stephanie Zolna had 15 kills and 11 digs on the day with fellow senior Kelly Mullins contributing 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophomore Ashley Pappas added six kills.
The Mountaineers return home on Wednesday, Oct. 5 to face St. Francis (Pa.) at 7 p.m.
"We're looking to carry over what we did this weekend," Gutierrez said. "This team is starting to find their confidence and running with it."
