The Mountaineers (6-3-3, 3-1-1) fell behind early when Pirate Katie Herr snuck behind the West Virginia defense for an early score just 14 minutes into the contest.
West Virginia rebounded quickly after the SHU score, getting on the board three minutes later when senior Marisa Kanela found Natalie Cocchi off a free kick and the sophomore from Ocean Township, N.J., headed in her first score of the season.
“After they scored early, we really need to settle in and play West Virginia soccer,” said head Coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “It took them scoring to wake us up, but we bounced back and came up with a great win today.”
Kanela again proved dangerous on a set piece when she found sophomore Ashley Banks’ head thirty seconds before the first half ended. Banks beat Seton Hall (6-4-2, 2-3-0) goalkeeper Amanda Becker to give West Virginia a 2-1 lead at the half.
Cathy Abel and Kiley Harris connected in the 86th minute with an insurance goal to complete the match scoring. Abel played a through ball to Harris who hit a perfectly timed run, setting up a one versus one chance with Becker. Harris took a few touches and easily beat Becker to her far post.
With the win, West Virginia remains perfect at home on the season, now boasting a 5-0-0 record at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers are back in action next Friday, Oct. 7 when they play host to No. 18 Marquette at 7 p.m. West Virginia will complete its 2005 home schedule on Sunday, Oct. 5 versus South Florida at 1 p.m.
