MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 16 West Virginia University women’s soccer team clinched a spot in the 2005 BIG EAST tournament, the conference announced today. The Mountaineers have also secured a first-round bye.
West Virginia (9-3-3, 6-1-1) has played in every conference tournament since 2000 and has advanced to the championship match on two occasions (2001, 2002).
This season the tournament is a four-round bracket with 10 teams vying for the BIG EAST championship. First-through fifth-place teams in each division make the tournament with places one through three receiving a bye into the quarterfinal.
First round and quarterfinal matches will be played at the campus site of the higher seeds while the semifinal and final rounds will be played at Marquette’s Valley Field on Nov. 4 and 6.
The Mountaineers are currently in third place in Division A, behind Connecticut and Marquette with three matches remaining in regular season play.
WVU returns to action at 7 p.m., on Friday, Oct. 21, when it travels to Connecticut for a pivotal contest with the Huskies at Morrone Stadium.
