WASHINGTON, D.C. - The 16th-ranked West Virginia University women’s soccer team used two first half goals to down the Georgetown Hoyas 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at North Kehoe Field.
The Mountaineers (9-3-3, 6-1-1) got on the board early in the first period when freshman Deana Everrett scored her fourth goal of the season off assists from Ashley Banks and Marisa Kanela. Banks set up the play when she sent a long cross toward Kanela on the far post. Kanela made a great save on a ball that appeared headed out of bounds, redirecting it to the center of the goal mouth. Everrett one-timed the ball for the WVU score.
WVU went up 2-0 with 15 minutes to play in the second half when the Mountaineers converted their third corner kick of the match. Junior Cathy Abel played the ball far post and sophomore Kim Bonilla headed her first goal of the season past Georgetown (11-5-1, 4-4-1) goalkeeper Jade Higgins.
Georgetown’s Chrissy Skogen put the Hoyas on the board at the 39:49 mark when she took a pass from Alexandra Hardy and slipped it past WVU goalkeeper Lana Bannerman.
WVU narrowly missed a chance for its third goal of the first half when a shot from Amanda Cicchini off a Kanela corner kick was blocked in the box by a Hoya defender. Sophomore Natalie Cocchi’s shot off the rebound soared high over the Georgetown goal.
GU’s Shara McNeil gave the Hoyas an excellent opportunity to even the score 15 minutes into the second half when she sailed a cross into the WVU box. Bannerman made an arching save, defectling the ball off the goal line to fellow Mountainer Robin Rushton who cleared the ball out of danger.
With six minutes remaining in the match, Banks beat her defender endline and sent a square ball in front of the Georgetown goal to senior Rachael Minnich whose shot sailed wide, missing an opportunity to give the Mountaineers a two-goal lead.
The win advances the Mountaineers win streak to six matches and keeps them unbeaten in the month of October. West Virginia has not lost since Sept. 11 and, including ties, is undefeated in nine straight matches.
The Mountaineer defense allowed only nine shots in the contest and only one shot on goal.
West Virginia is next in action on Friday, Oct. 21 when it travels to No.11 Connecticut for a 7 p.m., contest. The Mountaineers will then play a 1 p.m., match at Providence on Sunday, Oct. 23.
WVU’s match at Villanova originally scheduled for this past Friday night is likely to be rescheduled for a date and time following the Providence match and before the start of the BIG EAST tournament. The earliest a first round match can be played is Wednesday, Oct. 26.
