MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University gymnastics coach Linda Burdette today announced the team captains for the 2006 season.
Juniors Janáe Cox and Sabrina Noonan and sophomore Katie McGregor were voted as captains by their teammates.
Cox, an Otisco, Ind., native, served as team captain last year and was the first sophomore captain for the team in 17 years. McGregor, a New Kensington, Pa., native, becomes just the third sophomore captain in team history this year.
“Janáe brings experience as a captain, but the biggest thing that the captains provide is leadership,” Burdette said. “We hope that the captains will continue to assist with the communication between the team and the coaching staff and develop team unity.”
Cox was the team’s top all-arounder last year having qualified for nationals for a second straight year, while McGregor and Noonan, a St. Charles, Ill., native, were key elements on last year’s team in the uneven bars lineup.
West Virginia opens the 2006 season on Jan. 7, when it hosts the annual Gold & Blue intrasquad meet at the WVU Coliseum beginning at 1 p.m.
