WVU assistant head wrestling coach Zeke Jones was a key member of the 2004 U.S. Olympic team this past summer in Athens, Greece. Jones served as head coach of the U.S. team in guiding the freestyle wrestlers to three medals (one gold and two silver).
Each year the USOC recognizes the top male and top female athletes and the top team as selected by their respective member organizations. The male athlete of the year is 2004 Olympic gold medalist Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa/Sunkist Kids). The female athlete of the year is 2004 Olympic silver medalist Sara McMann (Lock Haven, Pa./Sunkist Kids).
Honored last year for their accomplishments in 2003 were cyclist Lance Armstrong, figure skater Michelle Kwan and the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team.
The Men's freestyle team was the discipline that won the most medals for the United States in wrestling during the 2004 Olympics. The U.S. men freestyle wrestlers placed second behind Russia in the medal count in freestyle wrestling, and was also second in the unofficial team standings.
The U.S. Olympic freestyle team consisted of Stephen Abas (Fresno, Calif.), Eric Guerrero (Stillwater, Okla.), Jamill Kelly (Stillwater, Okla.), Joe Williams (Iowa City, Iowa), Cael Sanderson (Ames, Iowa), Daniel Cormier (Stillwater, Okla.) and Kerry McCoy (Bethlehem, Pa.).
Coaching the U.S. team were Zeke Jones (Morgantown, W.Va.), Kevin Jackson (Colorado Springs, Colo.), Tom Brands (Blacksburg, Va.) and Bobby Douglas (Ames, Iowa).
Congratulations Zeke!
