VILLANOVA, Pa. – Liad Suez scored 21 points and grabbed nine rebounds to lead Villanova to a 58-52 victory over West Virginia Sunday afternoon at The Pavilion.
Villanova improves to 11-6, 4-2 with the victory while West Virginia, coming off a tough 76-75 loss at No. 14 Boston College last Thursday, falls to 11-6, 2-4.
The Mountaineers led the Wildcats by 10, 19-9, midway through the first half before Villanova began chipping away at WVU’s lead.
A three-minute dry spell by West Virginia enabled Villanova to cut West Virginia’s lead to four, 19-15, and after an Olayinka Sanni basket, the Wildcats got it to three on a Suez three.
A short jumper by Kate Dessart Mager right before the halftime buzzer pulled Villanova to within a basket, 24-22, at the break.
After a Meg Bulger three gave West Virginia a 29-25 lead, Villanova responded with a 6-0 run to take its first lead of the game at 31-29 on a pair of Jackie Adamshick free throws.
A pair of Adamshick jumpers out the Wildcats up by four, 35-31 before the Mountaineers eventually tied the game at 39 on a driving layup by Sherell Sowho with 9:25 remaining.
Betsy McManus and West Virginia’s Chakhia Cole traded threes to make it 42-all, and Suez hit another three for Villanova to retake the lead 45-42. Suez responded with another basket to lift Villanova’s lead to five and the Wildcats led by seven, 51-44, after a pair of Dessart Mager free throws.
Villanova made six of seven free throws from that point to ice the game.
In addition to Suez’ 21, Villanova got 13 points from Adamshick and 10 from McManus. Both Adamshick’s and McManus’ point totals came in the second half.
Bulger led West Virginia with 16 points on seven of 13 shooting. The sophomore also pulled down eight rebounds. Yolanda Paige contributed 12 points and freshmen Olayinka Sanni and Chakhia Cole combined to score 17 points and grab 14 rebounds.
The Mountaineers return home to face Syracuse (10-7, 2-4) on Wednesday, Jan. 26, at the Coliseum. That game will get underway at 7 pm.
