Gymnastics: WVU Routs Pitt For First Win

PITTSBURGH — The West Virginia University gymnastics team executed season high scores on all its events and picked up its first win of the season Saturday night at Pitt. The Mountaineers’ spirited 192.925-185.5 routing of the Panthers at the Fitzgerald Field House was each teams’ East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) opener.
In the first rotation, the Mountaineers executed clean sets on the even bars led by senior Jessica Bartgis’ season-high 9.7 giving WVU a 48.175 score on the event. Bartgis also had a season highs on vault (9.7) and floor (9.65).
Senior Carri Nagle also looked sharp on bars with a 9.675, while sophomore Janáe Cox and junior Alyssa DeSantis rated 9.65 and 9.625, respectively. Freshman Katie McGregor performed a 9.525 in her first scoring competition of her college career, while classmate Kara Weaver posted a 9.025.
The Mountaineers (1-1, 1-0 EAGL) executed clean sets on the vault, as well, with a 48.8 in the second rotation. Senior Kari Williams landed a 9.9 on vault marking her 13th career score of 9.9 or higher on the apparatus which ranks fourth in school history and ninth in all events. Cox (9.8) and freshman Jaime Gold (9.75) remained consistent on the event duplicating their marks from last week’s meet at Kent State.
Pitt (0-3, 0-1 EAGL) struggled in its first two rotations with 45.7 and 45.85 on vault and bars. The highest Panther score in either event was Lindsay Swan’s 9.475 score on bars.
West Virginia’s show-stopping floor exercises in the third rotation combined for a 48.25 score and gave the Mountaineers a whopping seven-point lead going into the final rotation, after the Panthers posted a 46.725 on beam. The Mountaineer floor routines included Dennis’ 9.8, Gold’s 9.725, Bartgis’ 9.65 and McGregor’s and Nagle’s marks of 9.55 and 9.525 — all of which are season highs. Cheryl Goldenfield also carded a 9.2.
West Virginia rounded out its performance in the fourth rotation by scoring a 47.7 on the balance beam. Cox led the Mountaineers with a season-high 9.8, followed by Goldenfield’s 9.7 and Dennis’ 9.55. Bartgis rated 9.525 on the event, while sophomore Aimee Brown turned in a season-high 9.125. Nagle faltered on her routine with an 8.85.
Pitt rounded out its meet with a 47.225 score on the floor exercise led by Robyn Marszalek’s score of 9.7, the highest Panther score in any event at the meet.
Cox, who had competed in 14 straight meets in the all-around to start her career, did not perform in the floor exercise. WVU’s only all-arounder Bartgis scored a season-high 38.575 for the win in the all-around.
Bartgis also won the bars, while Williams (vault), Cox (beam), and Dennis (floor) completed the first-place sweep for WVU.
The Mountaineers return to action for their home opener on Saturday, Jan. 29, against EAGL-foe North Carolina.
