MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The only two teams to win the NCAA national championship in rifle since 1988 will meet Wednesday, Jan. 19, as West Virginia hosts Alaska-Fairbanks at the Mountaineer Rifle Range beginning at 8 a.m.
Alaska-Fairbanks won the last six NCAA titles dating back to West Virginia’s last national championship in 1998. Owners of a record 13 national championships, the Mountaineers won titles from 1983-84, 1986, 1988-93 and 1995-98. The Nanooks won their first title in 1994 before winning six straight from 1999-2004.
The Nanooks (7-0) own the all-time series with the Mountaineers, 3-2, including one of WVU’s only two losses during the 2002-03 season in which it went 11-2.
This year West Virginia (1-4) has four losses, including last Friday’s 6148-6012 setback against Nebraska, which is the team’s first season with four or more losses since 1959.
