PALMYRA, Pa. – The West Virginia University rifle team’s long-awaited return to the range resulted in a 136-point loss to Nebraska Friday at Palmyra, Pa. The Mountaineers lost the Great America Rifle Conference match, 6148-6012, as the 120-shot smallbore and 40-shot air rifle course of scoring from last year was used instead the new 60-shot course in each discipline.
The Mountaineers (1-4, 0-3), in their first match since Nov. 14, were more competitive in air rifle with a 1511 aggregate score opposite the Cornhuskers’ 1530. Freshman Amy Smith captured the top WVU air score of 385, two points less than top Husker Kristina Fehlings’ score of 387. Classmate Lafe Kunkel shot 382, while junior Brian Launer and senior Eric Hensil fired 376 and 368, respectively.
Fehlings led Nebraska (6-1, 3-1) with an 1175 smallbore total and all but one counting team member of the Huskers out-shot WVU’s high score of 1147 fired by Launer. Kunkel, sophomore Adam Somers and Hensil marked 1134, 1112, and 1108, respectively.
The Mountaineers return to action at home Wednesday, Jan. 19, when they host defending NCAA champion Alaska-Fairbanks, owner of the last six national titles and the only NCAA champion since WVU won its last crown in 1998.
