Gymnastics: First Meet Sunday at Kent State

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University gymnastics team will open its 2005 season with a meet at Kent State on Sunday, Jan. 16, at 1 p.m. The non-conference meet held at the Memorial Athletic Convocation Center in Kent, Ohio, will be the season opener for both squads.
The No. 23-ranked Mountaineers enter the season as defending East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) champions after posting a 20-6-1 record last year and a fourth-place postseason finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional.
West Virginia returns 13 of 15 letter winners from last year’s team, including sophomore all-arounder and reigning EAGL rookie of the year Janáe Cox.
Linda Burdette enters her 31st year as head coach of the Mountaineers after leading the team to 26 trips to regionals, four to nationals, and a 507-204-3 record during her tenure.
The Golden Flashes enter the season after a 11-2 season as second-place finishers in the Mid-American Conference (MAC). Kent State, coached by Brice Biggins in his 14th year, returns seven of 11 letter winners from last season.
