MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University senior Kay-Jay Harris was named Walter Camp Foundation national offensive player of the week, it was announced Sunday.
Harris rushed for a school and Big East-record 337 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead No. 10-rated West Virginia to an easy 56-23 victory over East Carolina Saturday night in the 2004 season opener.
Harris topped Kerry Marbury’s 33-year school record of 291 yards set in 1971 against Temple and Edgerrin James’ Big East record of 299 yards set against UCLA in 1998.
Additionally, Harris’ 337 yards were the 24th most in a single game in NCAA history. Harris, who didn’t start the game, scored on runs of 2, 5, 51 and 76 yards and established school marks for most yards in a quarter (168) and half (223).
The Mountaineers won their 24th consecutive game when scoring at least 30 points.
Iowa University junior linebacker Chad Greenway was named this week’s defensive player of the week.
West Virginia (1-0) resumes action next Saturday against Central Florida (0-1) in Orlando.
