Cross Country: WVU Wins Duquesne Duals

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The West Virginia University women’s cross country team opened the season by defeating four teams en route to a first place finish at the Duquesne Duals on Saturday, Sep. 4, in Pittsburgh Pa.
With 15 being a perfect score, the Mountaineers defeated Pitt (24-31), Duquesne (22-33), St. Joseph’s (19-35) and St. Bonaventure (15-40).
Senior Megan Metcalfe led the Mountaineer attack with a record-breaking first place finish. The Edmonton, Alberta, native’s first place overall finish broke the course record.
Senior Jennifer Davis placed 3rd, junior Susan Davis finished 5th, freshman Nicole Lemal crossed the line in 12th and junior Colleen Hughes recorded a 19th place finish.
The Mountaineers were able to win the race despite not having three of their top seven runners. Senior Tara Struyk is still awaiting word from the NCAA on whether she will be cleared for a sixth year of eligibility after transferring from Oregon. Seniors Devon Plesuk and Jennifer Kemp opted to continue in their preparation for next weekend’s Indiana State Invitational.
“I was really pleased to see the way that some of our young kids stepped up today,” coach Jeff Huntoon says. “This was a great way to start out the season and we are looking forward to having everyone back for next weekend’s meet.”
The Mountaineers return to the trails on Saturday, Sep. 11, when compete in the Indiana State Invitational. The race is scheduled to begin at approximately 9 a.m.
