DAYTON, Ohio – The West Virginia University volleyball team fell to tournament host Dayton 3-0 in its third and final match of the Flyer Invitational on Saturday, Sep. 4, at Dayton, Ohio.
The Mountaineers (0-3) were swept (22-30, 27-30, 24-30) by the Flyers en route to their third consecutive loss of the tournament.
Dayton opened game one with a 12-6 lead. After the Mountaineers pulled to within three at 16-13, Dayton stretched the lead to 20-15. The Flyers closed out the game at 30-22.
West Virginia stormed out to a 5-1 lead in the second game but Dayton clawed back to tie it at 9-9. After the teams were knotted at 11, UD went on a 5-0 run, but the Mountaineers answered by pulling within 19-18 and eventually taking a 21-20 lead. From that point, neither team had more than a one-point edge as they alternated points until Dayton took a 29-27 lead. Christy Utnage blasted a set-up from Andi Moran for the game-winner.
The Flyers fell behind 7-5 in game three and watched the Mountaineers pull ahead 16-10. Dayton came back to tie it at 18-18 and the teams traded points until an Utnage kill gave UD a 25-24 lead.
The Mountaineers were led by junior Kelly Mullins who posted 10 kills. Freshman Abby Tevis added nine, Stephanie Zolna registered eight and Alison Zemanski recorded seven.
Sophomore Aurora Ebert-Santos finished the evening with 17 digs while Brandice Studnicka had 14 and Zolna added 10.
One bright spot for the Mountaineers over the weekend was the play of senior Alison Zemanski. The Perrysburg, Ohio, native’s consistent kill percentage combined with her outspoken leadership qualities propelled her to an all-tournament selection.
The Mountaineers return to action on Saturday, Sep. 11, when they host High Point at 3 p.m. and Delaware State at 8 p.m. as part of the Mountaineer Invitational. WVU will also play host to Bowling Green (12:30 p.m.) and Robert Morris (8 p.m.) on Sunday, Sep. 12 as part of the tournament.
