September 5, 2004 West Virginia game captains against East Carolina were Ben Lynch, Rasheed Marshall, Tim Brown and Scott Fleming. Coach Rich Rodriguez selects game captains each week. Team captains will be elected at the end of the season.
First-time starters for West Virginia against the Pirates were Brandon Myles, Hikee Johnson and Kevin McLee. A total of 30 WVU players now have at least one game of starting experience. Tops on that list are Jeff Berk (30), Rasheed Marshall (26) and Tim Brown (25). Berk leads the Mountaineers in consecutive starts with 30.
Senior Tim Brown and junior Jahmile Addae both started in today’s game against the Pirates. Both Mountaineers missed last season with injuries. Brown now has 25 career starts while Addae made his 17th career start.
Since 1891, West Virginia now has a record of 79-29-4 in season openers. And in those years when West Virginia won its season opener, the Mountaineers finished with a winning record in 54 seasons. West Virginia now has a record of 87-18-6 in home openers. In games where the home opener was also the season opener, WVU is 60-17-3.
West Virginia has now won 24 games in a row when scoring 30 points or more in a game. Dating back to 1980, the Mountaineers hold a 103-6-1 record when scoring 30 or more. WVU is 21-0 since 2000 when scoring 30 points or more.
Brandon Myles’ 51-yard reception in the first quarter was his first career catch. Myles also made his first career start today against the Pirates.
Jason Colson’s 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter was the fourth rushing touchdown of his career. He added a 15-yard touchdown rush in the second quarter.
Colson’s multiple touchdown game today was the second of his career. He had two two-yard touchdown runs last year against Temple.
Kay-Jay Harris’ 2-yard rushing touchdown in the first quarter was his fifth career rushing touchdown. He added a five-yard rushing touchdown in the second quarter to make his first career multiple touchdown game. Harris then had a 51-yard touchdown in the second quarter and then added a 76-yard rush in the fourth quarter.
Adam Jones’ 76-yard punt return for a touchdown was his first punt return for a touchdown of his career. It also marked his fourth career touchdown, all coming four different ways. Last year, he scored on a 87-yard kickoff return against Boston College, a 49-yard interception return against Boston College and a 47-yard fumble recovery against Temple.
Jones’ punt return for a touchdown also marked the second consecutive game the Mountaineers have scored on a punt at Milan Puskar Stadium. Last year, Lance Frazier scored on a 64-yard punt return against Temple, the last game of the regular season for WVU.
Ernest Hunter’s interception in the second quarter was the first of his career.
Kay-Jay Harris set West Virginia rushing records for yards rushing in a quarter and yards rushing in a half. Harris had 223 rushing yards in the first half, breaking Armin Mahrt’s 213-yard performance against Marietta in 1922. Harris also broke the 133-yard quarter record set by Garrett Ford Sr. against Pitt in 1965. Harris had 168 rushing yards in the second quarter against the Pirates.
Harris’ 337 yards rushing was the best rushing performance in WVU history. The all-time record was held by Kerry Marbury who had 291 yards against Temple in 1971. Harris also broke the BIG EAST record of 299 yards by Edgerrin James of Miami against UCLA in 1998.
Harris’ 337 yards rushing marked the first time in his career he has rushed for more than 100 yards in a game.
Chris Henry’s 60-yard touchdown pass from Rasheed Marshall was Henry’s 11th touchdown of his career. It was also the fourth-longest catch of Henry’s career.
Larry Williams’ interception in the third quarter was the first of his career.
Kay-Jay Harris set a Milan Puskar Stadium record for yards rushing in a game with 261, breaking Avon Cobourne’s mark of 260 yards against East Carolina two years ago.
With 41 yards rushing, quarterback Rasheed Marshall moved into second place on the BIG EAST’s career quarterback rushing list with 1,220. He passed Virginia Tech’s Michael Vick (1999-2000) who amassed 1,197 career yards.
Harris’ four touchdowns in a game equals the Mountaineer Field record for touchdowns in a game. He ties Quincy Wilson who had four touchdowns against Pitt last season and Avon Cobourne who had four touchdowns against Rutgers in 2001.
