OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (Sept. 27)
Jarrod Smith, West Virginia, So., F
Smith earns the honor after scoring West Virginia’s lone goal in an upset win over No. 9 Notre Dame on Sept. 23. The unassisted tally was scored at the 63:18 mark after an initial shot was blocked by the Irish goalkeeper. Smith followed up and netted the score to give WVU its first win over a nationally ranked team since 1999.
Justin McGeeney, Notre Dame, So., MF
McGeeney scored the game-winning tally in Notre Dame’s win over previously unbeaten No. 21 Villanova on Sept. 26. The unassisted goal was scored just after the halftime break at the 47:57 mark as McGeeney intercepted a misclear by the Wildcat defense. The sophomore dribbled forward three times and drilled a low shot for his team-high third goal of the season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK (Sept. 27)
Guy Melamed, Boston College, Sr., B
Melamed helped Boston College to two shutout wins over Providence (Sept. 22) and No. 5 St. John’s (Sept. 26). In the 2-0 win over the Friars, Melamed assisted on the game-winning goal early in the match. On Sunday, in the Eagles’ 2-0 upset win over the Red Storm, Melamed marked 2004 BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year, Simone Salino, limiting him to just two shots. He also tallied an assist in the win.
GOALKEEPER OF THE WEEK (Sept. 27)
Issey Maholo, Boston College, So., GK
Maholo earns the weekly honor for the third time in the four short weeks of the season. He registered his third and fourth shutouts of the year against Providence (Sept. 22) and No. 5 St. John’s (Sept. 26). Maholo had three saves in the Eagles’ 2-0 win over the Friars and recorded four saves in another 2-0 shutout win over St. John’s.
Nick Noble, West Virginia, So., GK
Noble recorded consecutive 1-0 shutouts against No. 9 Notre Dame (Sept. 23) and Syracuse (Sept. 26). He warded off four shots on goal by the ranked Irish and then he made two stops in the win over Syracuse for his first shutouts of the year.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK (Sept. 27)
Charlie Davies, Boston College, Fr., F
Davies earns the weekly honor for the second time this season. He scored two goals in Boston College’s 2-0 win over Providence for his first career multi-goal game.
