Morgantown, W.Va. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team defeated BIG EAST rival Syracuse 1-0 Sunday, Sept. 26, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (5-3-0) and Orange (2-5-0) played to a scoreless first half with WVU controlling most of play. WVU got off 10 shots in the first 45 minutes compared to Syracuse, who could only muster four.
Freshman Andy Wright provided the game winner for the Mountaineers in the 75th minute. The Liverpool, England, native got open with the ball from about 30 yards out and drilled a shot at Scheer. The shot headed towards the lower left corner and found the back of the net for Wright's first goal of the season and first goal of his career.
The Mountaineers played the second half much like the first, peppering Orange goalkeeper Rich Scheer with shots. Head coach Mike Seabolt's team kept the ball out of their defensive third for much of the half.
Sophomore goalkeeper Nick Noble recorded his second consecutive shutout with the win.
WVU returns to action when they travel to Washington, D.C., to face BIG EAST rival Georgetown Wednesday, Sept. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m.
