MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia University rifle coach Marsha Beasley today announced the team’s 2004-05 schedule.
The Mountaineers will compete against six of the top nine teams from last year’s NCAA championships, including defending champion Alaska-Fairbanks.
“This is a tough schedule,” said Beasley, who enters her 15th season as head coach. “Good competition only makes you a stronger team and we are looking forward to facing teams that we would face if we make the NCAA championships.”
Including Alaska-Fairbanks in a home match on Jan. 19, the Mountaineers will face third-place NCAA finisher Navy in their season opener at home on Oct. 17.
“We are very much appreciative that Alaska-Fairbanks can come to our place,” Beasley said. “It gives us an opportunity to compete against the world’s best shooters.”
Alaska-Fairbanks has won six consecutive NCAA championships dating back to 1999. West Virginia, owners of 13 NCAA titles, last won the national championship in 1998.
West Virginia travels to compete against four other teams that placed at NCAAs last year, all of which are fellow members of the Great America Rifle Conference (GARC). The matches include Army on Oct. 23, Nebraska on Jan. 14, at Palmyra, Pa., Kentucky on Feb. 5, with Rose-Hulman, and Xavier for the NCAA qualifiers on Feb. 12. The Mountaineers also host Ole Miss on Nov. 13, in a GARC match and non-conference opponents TCU on Nov. 14, and Ohio State on Jan. 23.
