Storrs, Conn. - The West Virginia University men's soccer team (3-3-0) fell to Connecticut (3-3-0) 2-0 Sunday, Sept. 19, in Storrs, Conn.
The game had originally been scheduled for Saturday, but due to rain and wet field conditions the game was bumped to Sunday.
The Mountaineers and Huskies played to a 0-0 standstill for 74 minutes until freshman forward Chukwudi Chijindu took a pass from senior midfielder Stephen Arias to score his first collegiate goal. The assist gave Arias his first one of the season.
As the game neared the end of regulation WVU put more emphasis on attacking to send it in to overtime, leaving the defense vulnerable. In the 90th minute UConn junior midfielder Drew Brown took advantage of a last unsuccessful Mountaineer attempt to tie the match and beat WVU backup goalkeeper Tom Orbacz for his first goal of the season.
WVU was only able to get off three shots in the match, while the Huskies kept the Mountaineer goalies busy with 11 shots. Sophomore keeper Nick Noble recorded three saves in the loss.
The road does not get any easier for WVU as they host BIG EAST foe No. 9 Notre Dame on Thursday, Sept. 23, at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff for the match is set for 7 p.m.
