CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The No. 13 West Virginia University women's soccer team shutout Boston College 2-0 to earn its second conference victory on Sunday afternoon at the BC Soccer Complex.
The Mountaineers (7-1-0, 2-0-0) scored one goal in each half to post their fourth shutout of the season.
With 15 minutes remaining in the first half, senior forward Laura Kane drew a foul in the box that earned West Virginia a penalty kick. Junior midfielder Marisa Kanela took advantage of the opportunity and beat Boston College (3-4-0, 0-2-0) goalkeeper Kate Taylor for her team-high fifth goal of the year.
WVU took its 1-0 lead into the half and continued to hold off the Boston College attack throughout the second half. Physical play dominated the match on both sides as a total of 35 fouls were whistled.
Kane came through on the offensive end once again for the Mountaineers when she picked up a ball that deflected off Taylor in the box for her fourth score of the year at the 72:58 mark.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lana Bannerman earned her fourth shutout of the season with the win. Bannerman tallied three saves in 90 minutes for the Mountaineers.
"Boston College is a hard working, intense and physical team," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown after her team's second straight BIG EAST win. "They really came after us and our back line dealt with the pressure very well. Every one stepped it up today and I'm proud of how we worked to get this win."
West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Sept. 24, when it plays host to Villanova at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Kickoff for that contest is set for 7 p.m.
