Volleyball: WVU Falls to Yale

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. – The West Virginia University volleyball team was defeated 3-1 (30-26, 22-30, 26-30, 23-30) by Yale in their first match of the Penn State Classic on Friday, Sept. 17, in State College, Pa.
The Mountaineers jumped out to a 1-0 game lead before Yale won three consecutive games to defeat WVU 3-1.
West Virginia (3-5) netted a team attack percentage of .200 in game one and .262 in game three, but struggled through the rest of the match. They recorded a match low percentage of .042 in game two and had a .062 attack percentage in the fourth and final game of the match.
Junior Julie Hockenson led the Mountaineers in kills with 17 while junior Stephanie Zolna and senior Alison Zemanski each recorded 12. Senior Brandice Studnicka registered a team-high 51 assists in the match.
Defensively, the Moutnaineers were led by freshman Abby Tevis who finished with 20 digs. Studnicka registered 19, Zolna had 17 and sophomore Aurora Ebert-Santos chipped in with 15.
Yale was paced by Jana Freeman who finished with 18 kills and Jacqueline Becker who recorded 46 assists. Anja Perlebach had a stellar evening defensively with a total of 35 digs.
West Virginia resumes play at the Penn State Classic tomorrow with a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m. against Maryland-Baltimore County. The Mountaineers play No. 5 Penn State in the nightcap at 7:30 p.m.
