Volleyball: WVU Falls to Bowling Green

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team dropped a hard fought 3-1 (30-28, 18-30, 21-30, 30-32) match to Bowling Green in their first game of the day on Sunday, Sept. 12, at the WVU Invitational.
West Virginia (2-4) put forth a total team effort to defeat Bowling Green in game one. After opening the contest with a 6-4 lead, BGSU went on an 8-1 run to pull ahead 14-5. Led by the solid play of junior Stephanie Zolna, WVU mounted a furious comeback sparked by a 15-3 run to make the score 20-17 in their favor.
WVU pulled ahead to lead by four at 22-18 before Bowling Green went on an 8-3 run to take the lead at 26-25. An Abby Tevis kill tied the contest at 26 and started a mini 4-0 run that would give the Mountaineers a 30-28 victory.
Zolna, Tevis, and Brandice Studnicka led WVU with two kills apiece. Studnicka had four assits while Zolna recorded six digs. The Falcons were led by Taylor Twite who had five kills, Amber Mareski who registered 15 assists and Emily Manser who recorded seven digs.
Bowling Green jumped out to a quick 5-1 lead in game two before WVU rallied to take a 12-9 lead. From that point forward, the Falcons outscored the Mountaineers 21-6 en route to a 30-18 victory. Zolna led WVU with six kills while Studnicka had ten assists. Tevis was the WVU leader in digs with six. Bowling Green was paced by Twite with five kills, Mareski with 12 assists and Manser with five digs.
In game three, the two teams traded points until Bowling Green broke a 13-13 tie with a 7-2 run that was the difference maker in the game. WVU would get no closer than six points the rest of the game and Bowling Green pulled through with a 30-21 victory. Melissa Mohr led BGSU with four kills while Mareski added 11 assists. WVU was paced by a five kill performance from Alison Zemanski and a five assist effort from Studnicka. Aurora Ebert-Santos led the Mountaineers in digs with six.
The fourth and deciding game was highly contested from the outset with a total of nine ties throughout. Bowling Green owned the largest lead of the contest when they opened the game with a 8-2 advantage. WVU used a 13-7 run to tie the game at 15 and took their first lead of the game at 20-19 when Zemanski hammered a kill through the Bowling Green defense. Bowling Green went on to take a 28-23 lead before WVU went on a 5-0 run to tie the game at 28. The two teams continued to trade points before the Falcons went on to clinch the match with a 32-30 victory
Leading West Virginia in game four was Tevis who recorded five kills and Kailee Goold who had 15 assists. Gold also recorded a team-high eight digs.
Leading WVU in the match was Zolna who recorded 15 kills. Goold led WVU in assists with 21 while Studnicka had 19. Ebert-Santos and Tevis both registered 16 digs on the day.
BGSU was paced by Mohr and Twite who both had 15 kills and Mareski who recorded a match-high 56 assists. Manser finished with 19 digs.
West Virginia plays its final match of the WVU Invitational later this evening when they take on the Robert Morris Colonials at 8 p.m.
