MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 16 West Virginia University women's soccer team downed James Madison 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The Mountaineers (5-1-0) used a second-half goal from senior forward Laura Kane and an own goal to net their fifth win of the year.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the match's first 45 minutes, but Kane took a through ball from junior defender Karrie Hutchins and buried it into the left corner of the goal at the 53:52 mark to put West Virginia on the board.
Eight minutes later, WVU capitalized off a James Madison error when a shot from junior forward Rachael Minnich hit the far post, bounced of a JMU defender and into the goal to make the match score 2-0 Mountaineers.
A West Virginia foul inside the box with less than six minutes to go resulted in a penalty kick opportunity for the Dukes, and James Madison's Melanie Schaffer took advantage of the mistake to make the final score 2-1 WVU.
The Mountaineers out shot the Dukes 22-7 on the day.
"This was a huge win for us," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. "It was a regional game and we needed to come out on top. Today was great preparation for BIG EAST play."
James Madison falls to 3-2-0 on the season.
West Virginia returns to action on Friday, Sept. 17, at 4 p.m., when they open BIG EAST play at Providence. WVU's New England road trip will conclude with a 1 p.m., match on Sunday, Sept. 19, at Boston College.
