Volleyball: WVU Wins Home Opener

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University women’s volleyball team defeated High Point 3-1 (30-21, 27-30, 30-21 30-27) on Saturday, Sept. 11, in their first match of the WVU Invitational.
The Mountaineers never trailed in game one and defeated the Panthers by a score of 30-21. Alison Zemanski, Stephanie Zolna and Abby Tevis registered three kills for the Mountaineers while Aurora Ebert-Santos recorded nine digs.
West Virginia got off to a hot start in game two and led by six at 13-7 before High Point went on a 10-2 run to take the lead at 17-15. The two teams traded points before the Panthers were able to pull away and squeak by the Mountaineers by a 30-27 margin. Zemanski and Kelly Mullins paced WVU with five digs while Ebert-Santos (6) and Tevis (7) led the Mountaineers in digs.
WVU and High Point stayed close early in game three but West Virginia was able to use a 17-10 run late in game three to pull away from the Panthers and take the contest by a score of 30-21.
Game four proved to be most highly contested game of the entire match. The team’s traded points and with the game tied at nine, WVU went on a 4-0 run to take a 13-9 lead before High Point returned the favor with four unanswered points. After five unanswered points from West Virginia made it an 18-13 game, High Point scored five in a row to tie it at 18. The Mountaineers then scored four straight and found themselves up six at 29-23. Despite a valiant effort that saw High Point close the gap to 29-27, West Virginia blocked a Panther kill-attempt to clinch their first win of the season.
West Virginia was led by Mullins and Julie Hockenson who registered 14 kills apiece. Ebert-Santos continued her dominant play defensively with 29 digs while Tevis added 22.
The Mountaineers return to action this evening when they play host to Delaware State in the final game of the day at 8 p.m.
