MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The No. 16 West Virginia University women's soccer team topped visiting Arizona 2-0 at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Friday night.
The Mountaineers (4-1-0) combined first-half goals by Marisa Kanela and Ashley Weimer with stellar defense to claim their third shutout of the season.
Kanela got West Virginia on the board first at 19:49 when she took a through ball from Laura Kane and blasted it into the close side of the goal from 12 yards out. The goal was Kanela's third of the season; the assist, Kane's third as well.
Weimer rounded out the match scoring in the 39th minute when she nailed a drop pass from junior midfielder Mollie Merkel into the upper right corner of the goal for her first score of the season. The assist was the first of Merkel's Mountaineer career.
"Arizona came out with high energy and intensity," said head coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. "They're a great team and they really put the pressure on us. I'm proud of how this team came together and finished the game."
West Virginia outshot Arizona 14-6 on the night. Sophomore goalkeeper Lana Bannerman was forced to make only two saves in her third shutout of the season.
The Wildcats drop to 4-1-0 on the season.
The Mountaineers return to action on Sunday, Sept. 12, with a 1 p.m., contest against James Madison at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
