LEXINGTON, Ky. - The West Virginia University women’s soccer team set a school record en route to its second victory of the season, downing the Ohio Bobcacts 7-0 on Sunday afternoon at the UK Soccer Complex.
The seven-goal margin of victory is the largest for a WVU women’s soccer team since the program’s inception in 1996.
Senior forward Laura Kane got the No. 15 Mountaineers (2-0-0) on the board just 13:19 into the contest when she slid a pass from sophomore Cathy Abel past Ohio goalkeeper Melissa Parra.
Thirty seconds later, junior Kambria Riggins sent a cross into the box and a diving Rachael Minnich added her first goal of the season.
Freshman Ashley Banks, making her first career start, advanced the West Virginia lead to 3-0 at the 18:18 mark when she scored on an assist from junior Marisa Kanela.
Banks notched her second goal a minute later, making it 4-0 WVU at the half.
Minnich contributed her second goal of the match a minute and half into the second half off a set play from senior Ashley Weimer. The Mason, Ohio, native then added her third goal in the 60th minute. With seven points in the contest, the junior forward tied a school record for points in a game established by Rena Lippa versus Bowling Green in 1998 and matched by Katie Barnes against Marshall in 2000.
Banks also had a hat trick in the match, scoring off assists from Minnich and Kanela in the 55th minute. Prior to today’s contest, only three Mountaineers had ever scored three goals in a game. At no other time in WVU women’s soccer history have two players scored three or more goals in a match.
Sophomore goalkeeper Lana Bannerman recorded her first shutout of the season and the 11th of her career with a three-save performance.
Nineteen Mountaineers saw action in the non-conference contest.
West Virginia opens a season 2-0 for the first time since 2001.
The Mountaineers return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., against Purdue. The match will be the first-ever in Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium. Dedication of the new facility will come prior to West Virginia’s 2 p.m., match on Sunday, Sept. 5, versus No. 10 Virginia.
