MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University women’s soccer team opens its ninth season with two weekend matches at the UK Invitational.
The Mountaineers, ranked as high as No.15 in one preseason poll, take on host Kentucky at 7:30 p.m., on Friday, Aug. 27, at the UK Soccer Complex. West Virginia plays its second match of the invitational on Sunday, Aug. 29, at 11:30 a.m., versus Ohio.
Friday’s match will be the first meeting between West Virginia and Kentucky while Sunday’s contest with Ohio renews a series that has been dormant since 1998. WVU and OU met in 1997 and 1998; the Mountaineers own a 1-0-1 record in those matches.
West Virginia returns seven of 11 starters from the 2003 squad that went 17-4-2 and advanced to the Sweet 16.
The Mountaineers will return to Morgantown and play the first-ever match in Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 1, at 7 p.m., versus Purdue. Dedication of the new facility will come prior to the 2 p.m., match versus No.10 Virginia on Sunday, Sept. 5.
